Born in Leeds in 1978, Dan Potts developed an early interest in music, singing opera and choral music, and playing in large jazz and rock bands. Graduating in 2000 with a degree in Philosophy and Politics from the University of York, he had risen to the position of Editor of the University film review magazine. At York he sang with the University of York Choir, and after with Leeds Youth Opera, Leeds College of Music Opera, Leeds Festival Chorus, The Northern Wagner Chorus, Leeds Gilbert & Sullivan Society and Leeds Philharmonic Chorus. Dan also acted in various murder mystery events and ITV dramas. The result was the development of a very keen interest in the relationships between music and narrative structure, visual art, the written text, and the moving image. Dan commenced music studies in 2008 at Leeds where he developed and refined his interest in these relationships, studying composition under Mic Spencer. Under Spencer, Dan developed methods for interpreting written texts and visual art as a function of metaphorical and allegorical projections of personal, mental anomalies. Thus, as well as acting as a mode of personal expression, Dan’s music seeks to express matters of philosophical resonance through its small and large-scale structure. Dan has written for: Dan continues to compose for the concert stage and is currently working on many film music composition projects of varying scales for which he composes generally, but not exclusively, in genre-specific styles. He welcomes opportunities of this nature with great enthusiasm!

Bass Lessons2013

Hi – I’m Dan Potts (B.A. Music) and I provide affordable bass guitar lessons in Leeds.

I have played bass guitar in jazz bands, in orchestras for musicals, and in rock and roll bands. I currently play with The Long Players, a function band for all occasions. I teach affordable bass guitar lessons from my home in Leeds. I teach my students how to play bass guitar by sight-reading bass guitar music. I also teach my students how to improvise and create their own bass guitar lines of music. In order to achieve this, I teach the necessary music theory.

My aim is to tailor the lessons according to the music you want to play, building on a good solid grounding, whatever your current level of musical training.  I charge £10.00 per half hour.

Let’s play!

In 2016, Dan Potts has so far composed and recorded the soundtracks for Talking Lens Productions short, Holding On To Nothing (Director: Raza Mallal) and the feature, My Jewish Auntie (Director: David Morton), for Made in Leeds TV. Holding On To Nothing is being entered into various film festivals. In the first part of the year, Dan composed and recorded incidental music for the popular Channel 5 program, The Yorkshire Vet. Over the summer of 2016, Dan has composed an album of Klezmer music for TV adverts and is currently working on such an album in a Baroque style. In winter 2016, Dan is collaborating with directors on the trailers for two features with a view to the feature soundtrack itself. Dan will soon again be collaborating with Dave Morton for the composition of a soundtrack for his forthcoming feature. Dan is also composing the soundtracks for two shorts this autumn. More details will follow. Dan continues to cover opera and classical music in Yorkshire for Musical Opinion, and visual arts exhibitions for Aesthetica. It was with immense pleasure that Dan sang in Mahler's 8th Symphony in June as part of Leeds International Concert Season. Dan continues to play bass guitar with The Long Players, and with Emil Sparkes, with which recorded an album in May.
