Born in Leeds in 1978, Daniel Potts developed an early interest in music, singing opera and choral music, and playing in large jazz and rock bands. Graduating in 2000 with a degree in Philosophy and Politics from the University of York, he had risen to the position of Editor of the University film review magazine. At York he sang with the University of York Choir, and after with Leeds Youth Opera, Leeds College of Music Opera and Leeds Festival Chorus, and acted in various murder mystery events and ITV dramas. The result was the development of a very keen interest in the relationships between music and narrative structure, visual art, the written text, and the moving image. Potts commenced music studies in 2008 at Leeds where he developed and refined his interest in these relationships, studying composition under Mic Spencer.
Under Spencer, Potts developed methods for interpreting written texts and visual art as a function of metaphorical and allegorical projections of personal, mental anomalies. Thus, as well as acting as a mode of personal expression, Potts’s music seeks to express matters of philosophical resonance through its small and large-scale structure.
He currently reviews visual arts exhibitions online for Aesthetica magazine, and reviews classical/Western art music concerts for the online culture magazine, Culture Vulture.
Potts continues to compose for the concert stage and is currently working on many film music composition projects of varying scales for which he composes generally, but not exclusively, in genre-specific styles. He welcomes opportunities of this nature with great enthusiasm!
